SONG OF THE DAY ROUND-UP 29/04/2019 - 05/04/2019

Here's this weeks round-up of new songs I've loved.

29/04 - 909 - EDEN

909 is the most recent release from low-key artist Eden. The track starts off with a surprising orchestral opening but soon goes into the somber synth that is well and truly associated with Eden. The sound of the rest of the song is very simple, with an acoustic guitar, a beat and the occasion layered vocal and synthy sound. With the lyrical content going hand in hand with the solemn instrumentals, 909 really is a song for the brokenhearted who just want to space out for a little while. This type of track is what Eden does best, and 909 is the epitome of this.

30/04 - WOOZY - KWASSA

Completely contrasting the previously mentioned sad melodic track, Woozy by Kwassa is instead a track that has a great summery sound. It's the classic type of song you can imagine playing out of a bar on a beach that you can just sit and relax to with a fruity cocktail hand. The strong beat of the song makes it very catchy and you'll find yourself toe-tapping from the get-go. It's absolutely a song for the hot days that are (hopefully) coming up over the couple months that are. It's a track that belongs on any given chilled out playlist for summer days. The vocals, as usual with Kwassa, fit the song well and are super consistent. Although this isn't the most powerful or heartfelt song Kwassa have released, it's a nice song too bop to, and those types of songs are just as important as the others.

01/05 - GOT IT LIKE THAT - JAE STEPHENS

Got It Like That is the new release from Jae Stephens, an up and coming R&B artist who is definitely going places. She's someone I have been following for years, and it's great to see someone you supported from the very beginning actually going somewhere and making really good music. Stephens's usual smooth vocals fill up the relatively simple but effective bassline and make this song a little bit sultry and very easy to listen to. The sound of Got It Like That goes well with other up-and-coming RnB artists such as Ella Mai and SZA; easy to listen to but still has that bit of an edge that leaves you intrigued as to what else the artist has got. This is the first song coming from an EP which is on its way, and I'm very interested to see what else she can come up with.

02/05 - JOY - BASTILLE

What the world needs right now is a little joy, so Bastille's new release is very well timed. Bastille have their very own sound that is a mix of pop, rock, and indie, and this sound is perfectly portrayed within Joy. The song is very classically Bastille, with a few extra almost dance-like touches which show they're moving slowly forward with their new releases. The choir vocals within the background of the chorus really make this song, and lifts it up a level and make it even more joyous. The vocals are good as usual, with the lead vocalist Dan Smith even going that extra mile with some high notes. Overall, Joy is a very good Bastille track and certainly sets the tone for upcoming releases.

03/05 - IF I CANT HAVE YOU - SHAWN MENDES

If I Can't Have You is a casual and cool pop song that Shawn Mendes is a master at. Since seeing him live, I have a new appreciation for Mendes's music and If I Can't Have You is the epitome of the chilled kinda song that will no doubt performed with surprisingly exceptional vocals. That's pretty much all there is to say for this one. It's a good song!

04/05 - HOLD YOU NOW - VAMPIRE WEEKEND FT DANIELLE HAIM

The Vampire Weekend released a new album which featured a couple of track with Danielle Haim but Hold You Now was my favorite of them. Ezra Koeing and Danielle Haim's vocals go really well together,  which isn't really a surprise bearing in mind that both Haim and Vampire Weekend have the same chilled indie vibe to their sound. This heartfelt acoustic track is a perfect example of the rest of Father of The Bride, Vampire Weekend's new album. If you haven't listened yet, I'd recommend it!

05/06 - ALLIGATOR - OF MONSTERS AND MEN

Last but not least we have a somewhat surprising come back from Of Monsters and Men. Alligator is their most recent release and is a far cry from their hit track Little Talks. The band seem to have stepped further towards the pop-rock genre and away from the folky-indie genre. However, this change works and the vocals really suit this new sound that they've got. It's intriguing to have a band shift their sound in this way, but it makes their next releases even more anticipated. I hope they stick to this sound because it really does work for them. The slightly heavier elements mixed with the broken vocals meld brilliantly together. Alligator has made me very excited for the album that I am sure is on the way.

That's all for today. Make sure to check out my songs of the day as I post them on my instagram @rubyonmusic_
