The Amazons, a 4-piece from Reading, England have been the name on many people's lips since their debut album in 2017, has recently released their new album 'Future Dust'. With their career really starting to bloom, has this new album got the key to the band shooting to success? Well...

The track 'Mother' sets up for a really good album. A song that could easily take the stage at a stadium or Reading and Leeds fest with it's punching vocals and heavy rock instrumentals featuring intense guitar riffs and a lot of symbols. However, it seems that at some point along the line, the album gets a little generic.

The overarching sound of the album is British indie-rock mixed with a little vibe of classic American rock thrown in there too. The indie-rock genre has some huge names at the moment as incredibly saturated as, ironically, the genre becomes more mainstream. So, to really stand out, indie bands and artists have to do something special, something a little innovative, and this just wasn't really up there. Future Dust really did have the potential to be a great album and the talent that the band has is undeniable, but it's just missing that something; that spark of 'Okay, this is something different and new and I can't wait to hear the next track that comes on'.

However, this all being said. Future Dust IS a good album. Each track is sonically solid and has the grit and intensity that you expect from The Amazons. 'Generic' and 'Bad' are by no means synonyms of one another.  As previously mentioned, the introductory track 'Mother' is great, and 25 and it's reprise are up there too. The sound, in general, is great, especially the hard-hitting instrumentals, it's just unfortunate that a lot of the tracks have a feel to them where it's like they've been heard over and over again before the album was even released.

Perhaps the issue with The Amazons is that they have succumbed to 'second-album syndrome'; where their first album was such a top 10 success that Future Dust had insane expectations placed upon it that would have been incredibly difficult to meet. It's like you want to find the band, shake their shoulders and say 'YOU CAN DO BETTER!'.  However, with a summer full of festival performances to come, and a great reputation in the world of indie music, I'm sure The Amazon's won't suffer too much. The album does show signs of really incredible music-making ability, and I hope to see more of that in albums to come.

RATING: 2/5.
