BUT WHERE IS SHE GOING? MILEY CYRUS 'SHE IS COMING' REVIEW

Miley Cyrus has released a snippet of her upcoming album in the form of the EP 'SHE IS COMING', ironically titled as in the world of Twitter this is what fans say about, well, any music artist doing anything. It's interesting to see the selection of new music Cyrus chose to be presented first, as it seems that every song is pretty much starkly different from the rest, and doesn't really give us a clue as to what the eventual album will sound like.

She Is Coming is introduced by a powerful and angry feminist anthem in the form of 'Mother's Daughter'. The instrumentals, and in particular the bassline, in this song, are incredibly intense and clearly sets a certain tone. The lyrics are a mix of fun and poignant phrases, with particular a focus on the phrase 'Don't fuck with my freedom' which appears in the chorus. Recent news stories and the current political landscape make this simple phrase particularly meaningful. However, politics aside, this is a song that simultaneously is serious and doesn't take itself too seriously, and was a great way to start the album.

The rest of the album doesn't shy away from controversial topics such as this. (PS: I can't believe in the good year of 2019 I'm describing women's rights as 'controversial'). From 'Unholy' which discusses Cyrus's reputation and struggles in the media, to D.R.E.A.Ms which is a commentary on drug usage, Miley Cyrus is not afraid to talk about everything and anything in her music. This is a truly great quality for her to has, as it makes her so outstandingly unpredictable. She's not an artist that's just going to talk about love and sex, she's going to grab you by the shoulders and make you listen to her darker struggles. However, there's no sense of self-pity, just simple story-telling.

However, the rest of the EP is not this serious. 'Cattitude' featuring RuPaul is nothing but good fun; a track that sounds exactly like any other RuPaul song with a more solid bassline. This is followed by Party On The Street featuring Swae Lee and Mike Will Made It, a chilled and hazey song about, well, partying and feeling chilled.

She Is Coming then ends with 'The Most' an honest love letter to Cyrus's husband. It was clever for Cyrus to have The Most round out the EP, as the lyrics of the track discuss the fact her beau has loved her through all of her worst times; these worst times being the ones she describes on some of the songs previous. The Most is a beautiful song in the sense that it highlights Cyrus's vocal and lyric-writing ability, and also in the sense that it describes love in a non-perfect way.

Overall, as said in the introduction, if She Is Coming was designed to set the tone for an upcoming album, the listener will be left as confused as they were before they listened. However, this being said, perhaps the point is that Cyrus doesn't want people to be able to guess what's coming. She's saying that she is coming, but you won't be able to guess in what way.
She Is Coming is a mish-mash of ideas, points of views and genres too and quite frankly, it's really not half bad. Miley Cyrus has always been incredibly talented, so it's no surprise that She Is Coming has gone down relatively well with fans. Most importantly, the EP has certainly left excitement in the air regarding her next releases.
