SONG OF THE DAY ROUND-UP: 27/05/2019 - 01/06/2019

This is a round-up of the best tracks I've listened to over the course of this week!

JEAN - CASSYETTE

Jean is a vintage rock anthem by the hugely talented Cassyette. With her uniquely deep and gritty voice, Cassyette tells a similar story to Dolly Parton's Jolene, but less country-princess and more nineties grunge. The heavy yet immensely catchy chorus really makes the song stand-out, with it being so unexpected from the relatively lowkey verses. If looking for a new female rockstar to follow, then Cassyette should absolutely be in the running. Having only released 'Jean' so far from her upcoming album, there's much to be expected of Cassyette and it's incredibly unpredictable what sound she'll go for next, and that's what is especially intriguing. I'll definitely be keeping a look out for future releases, as for someone who is very fresh to the music scene, Cassyette seems to have something very different going for her which could lead to a huge amount of success.

SATURDAY NIGHT - HUNNY FT BLEACHED

HUNNY are a band featured on song's of the day pretty often, but I couldn't not include this recent release. Saturday Night has the vocals of pop-punk of the 2000s mixed with the instrumentals of the indie scene of 2019, and somehow the combination works together. Not quite electro, not quite indie and not quite pop punk, HUNNY have managed to find a golden circle of sound that is familar yet somehow different, and thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. The introduction of the feminine vocals from Bleached really gives a new dimension to the song and lifts it to another level. It's something slightly confusing but in the best way. Saturday Night is a short but fun and uplifting track for all of us that are spending our weekends in rather than partying.

COLDER - NINA NESBITT

Colder is one of the tracks on Scottish songstress Nina Nesbitt's most recent album 'The Sun Will Come Up The Seasons Will change' and is the epitome of an upbeat tune paired with sad lyrics. The song discusses the struggle of heartbreaking leaving someone 'a little colder' every time it happens. The whole of Nesbitt's recent album was pretty exceptional, but Colder was a personal favourite. There seemed to be a theme of reminiscence and heartbreak amongst the album and Colder really takes these ideas and combines them in a well-accomplished track. With the melancholy meaning but still a tune that is buoyant enough that you can dance to it, it's a win-win situation. Colder will stay with you for rest of the day and make you want to listen to it again and again, and that's definitely yhr sign of a great song.

LJUBLJANA - GLASS CAVES

Ljubljana is the name of the capital of Slovenia and not simply a nonsensical word, but that bit of trivia doesn't exactly help make sense of this mystical rocky track.  Ljubljna is one of the songs from Glass Caves most recent single release 'Trilogy'. It is an electric dream of a song that mixes a seemingly normal electro-rock track with whimsical lyrical content that sends you to somewhere else. In general, Ljubljana is a really great song that truly encompasses the sound of Glass Caves and goes incredibly well with the other two songs on Trilogy, which makes it a perfectly rounded single release. Overall, just a really good (and a little weird) song.

SORRY - MALI KOA

Sorry is the most recent release from up-and-coming sultry singer-songwriter Mali Koa. Sorry seems to have an elevated level to it compared to Koa's previous releases, and there's something about this track that really makes you feel that Mali-Koa has refined herself and is now ready to be the incredible success that she has the potential of being. The combination of calming and beautiful vocals and a subtle beat makes Sorry a rich track that's truly full of life despite it's mellow vibe. With Mali-Koa's main music project expected to be coming this year, Sorry combined with the othe promotional song 'Honest' makes it seem like the project will be something great. Overall, Sorry is a raw and refined track, that promises an album of a similar description.

SAD FOREVER - LAUV

Electro-pop singer LAUV's recent release Sad Forever is about the difficulties of having mental health issues; a theme that is prevalent (as it should be) among the music of 2018-2019. The song mixes Lauv's always on-point-vocals with raw and honest lyrical content about really struggling and letting his mental health issues take over, but realising that he doesn't want to be 'Sad Forever'. The surprisingly upbeat song is simultaneously sensitive and uplifting. Sad Forever is incredibly catchy and can easily be listened to multiple times in one go. It's rare a song is created that could just as easily be played at a summertime BBQ and at 3am when having a bit of a crying session, but Lauv has managed it. Sad Forever is an unexpected and beautiful song, and possibly my favourite of this week.
