A LITTLE RAIN NEVER HURT ANYONE: NINFIELD GIG REVIEW 2019

Saturday afternoon and evening (27th July) I went to the Ninfield Gig. The gig is a local event which invites local bands to play, and the variety of acts performing is always pretty wide. From young up-and-comers to cover bands that have been doing what they do for years. The event lasts from early afternoon to late evening and has something for everyone, whether you're 9 or 99.

We suspected it might be canceled due to the heavy rain earlier on in the day, but luckily the rain cleared up and we were confident enough it would hold off to go down there.

We arrived at 4pm, by which time two acts had already come and gone. From what we heard from people who had been there earlier on though, the other two acts were really great. We especially heard good things about the new band on the block 'Wild Horses', who seemed to surprise everyone with how great their performance was. If there's something the gig is good at, it's giving new artists like Wild Horse new ears, and although I wasn't there for their performance, I'll definitely be checking them out simply because of the good word-of-mouth.

Spooky Wagons

The first band I saw perform was Spooky Wagons. Spooky Wagons are best described as country-folk-rock and do a lot of covers as well as a few of their own tracks. The covers they did had many people singing along and getting involved, and their own tracks were pretty impressive too. It was a great band to first see while mingling around and getting ourselves set up. Everything about them was generally good and I haven't got more to say other than that!

Knocksville

Knocksville were the next band up and they were certainly something different. Their intense form of punky rock was similar to that of Slaves and Royal Blood. It was certianly a contrast to hear that sound at 3pm in the afternoon with young children running around, but there was something great about that contrast. Knocksville had people up and jumping and you could see, even from where I was standing, that they put so much spirit and energy into their performance. They rocked and they rocked HARD. One point towards the end of the show, the bass player was actually stood on his own bass while playing it. They treated the gig like it was their very own headline concert and it resonated really well with the crowd. They're a lot of fun and I'd definitely recommend giving them a listen if you're into some hardcore rock.

Grace and Danger

Grace and Danger were back for their second year at the gig, after being very popular last year. 'Grace and Danger', you may know, is a song by famous singer-songwriter John Martyn, and it's no coincidence as the drummer and guitarist of the band are in fact related to the British rockstar. Much like the rest of the bands that were seen, Grace and Danger had a lot of energy and spirit and definitely got the crowd singing along. The vocals were particularly impressive with Grace and Danger too. It's a shock that Grace and Danger haven't got their proper break yet because they are incredibly talented and certainly have something about them that's very impressive indeed.

Fat Belly Jones

The next band up were Fat Belly Jones; a six-man SKA band who give a variety of tracks their very own brassy twist with a multitude of trumpets being part of the performance. The band came out to 'Let Me Entertain You' by Robbie Williams which although may not have been the greatest track to add a SKA twist to, it finally got people up and properly dancing. They brought a fun energy to the day and, with the help of a few beverages too, got a substantial amount of the crowd up on their feet. Fat Belly Jones are well known locally so a lot of people would have expected a lot of them and they certainly delivered.

Unfortunately, we had to leave before well-known local band The Cavalier's came on but I have no doubt that they were up to their usual standard with their impressive covers and purpose to get everyone up dancing.

Overall, the Ninfield Gig isn't really about whose on stage (although this year the artists were particularly good), it's about the atmosphere. It's about everyone of all ages being able to have fun and mingle to the background of some great music, and that's exactly what the Ninfield Gig 2019 achieved. Even if it was a little cloudy.
